The Grave Digger's Handbook is the first book that Liesel stole. She found it lying in the snow on the day of her brother's burial. She brings it to the Hubermann's house, and hides it under her bed. With Hans Hubermman's teaching, it is the first book that she learns to read. This book is very important to Liesel as it is the last thing that reminds her of her brother and mother, and is at the heart of Hans and Liesel's friendship.
The second book that Liesel stole is titled The Shoulder Shrug, which she stole from a Nazi book burning. Not much information is given about the book, except that it has a Jewish antagonist, which was why it was at the book burning. Through this book Liesel unlocks a world full of books. If Ilsa Hermann, the mayor's wife, wouldn't have seen Liesel steal the book, Liesel would've never been invited to Ilsa's library.
The Whistler is the third book that Liesel steals. It is about a murder being chased by police. This is the first book that Liesel steals from Ilsa Hermann's library. She steals it out of anger, after the Hermanns fire Rosa because they can't pay her anymore. The Whistler is the first book Liesel reads during the air raids, and it helps Liesel notice that her passion for words and books can help others around her.
The Dream Carrier is another book that Lisel steals from Ilsa's library. The book is about an abandoned child that wants to grow up to be a priest. She steals this book during the period that Max is sick. Because a doctor can't be called, for obvious reasons, Liesel resorts to the only remedies she knows: collecting Max gifts, praying, and reading him the Dream Carrier.
A Song in the Dark is the book Liesel stole from Ilsa's library ,before Liesel received the Duden Dictionary and Thesaurus. Not much is known about A Song in the Dark except that she stole it without Rudy's help, and she picked the book because it was green. The reason being because she didn't own any books who's covers were green.
Not much is known about The Last Human Stranger, except for that it was the last book the Liesel stole from Ilsa's library.
